How to Drive Cheaply on the Gold Coast

When to Drive Your Rental Car on the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast isn’t as busy as Brisbane – but it still has peak times. Avoid the M1, the Gold Coast Highway, and the Smith Street Motorway from 7 to 9 a.m. and from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

If you’re driving during school terms, try not to drive through school zones from 8 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 4 p.m. Use Google Maps to pick an alternative route.

Where to Park Your Rental Car on the Gold Coast

Unlike Brisbane, the Gold Coast has plenty of parking. You might have to pay for on-street parking if you visit:

  • Bundall
  • Burleigh Heads
  • Broadbeach
  • Surfers Paradise
  • Southport.

Visiting those suburbs a lot with your Cheapie rental car? Download the EasyPark app. It’s a free app that lets you pay for parking over the phone instead of at a meter.

Where to Refuel Your Rental Car on the Gold Coast

To find low-cost petrol on the Gold Coast, use a fuel price app like PetrolSpy. As a rule of thumb, service stations along the M1 tend to be more expensive than those in lower-traffic areas.

When you’re returning your car to our Upper Coomera depot, the closest service station is the Shell on Chatswood Road (if you’re coming from the south).

How to Avoid Fines on the Gold Coast

Don’t want a fine on the Gold Coast? Learn and follow Queensland’s road rules. Here are some of the most important:

  • Don’t speed – ever. The Gold Coast has lots of police and lots of speed cameras. Make sure you follow the speed indicated by on-road speed signs, including roadwork signs. Don’t trust your GPS.
  • Wear your seatbelt correctly or get a $1,209 fine.
  • Don’t use your mobile phone. Touching it while driving – including having it on your lap or using it when stationary – will get you fined $1,209.
  • Don’t drive when you’ve been drinking.
  • Don’t try to ‘catch’ yellow lights. The Gold Coast has 22 red light cameras, and getting caught will lead to a $645 fine.

Where to Visit on the Gold Coast

With a Cheapie rental car, you’re not limited to the places public transport can take you. Here are the best free attractions to visit on the Gold Coast:

  • Swim at Burleigh Heads or Kirra Beach.
  • Head to Springbrook or Lamington National Park.
  • Stroll through Mount Tamborine’s Gallery Walk.
  • Explore the Currumbin Rock Pools in Currumbin Valley.
  • Spot a whale from Point Danger (from June to November).

Holidaying in Queensland?

Cheap Car Rentals Gold Coast FAQs

How old do I need to be to hire one of your cars on the Gold Coast?

You must be aged 21–80 and hold an open driver’s license to hire a Cheapie car. Our insurance policy means we can’t rent to anyone aged under 21 or over 80.

How many kilometres can I drive per day for free?

kilometres will be tallied when you return your car and charged at 10 cents per kilometre.

For context, driving from a central Gold Coast suburb like Surfers Paradise to a Gold Coast hinterland location like Mount Tamborine and back again would use around 80 kilometres. In other words: unless you’re doing a lot of driving, you shouldn’t exceed 600 kilometres per week.
